Dear Dr. Fox,

With this letter the undersigned wish to express our profound appreciation to you for stating in very concise and clear terms the truth regarding the Greekness of Macedonia and directly correcting the erroneous positions of Skopje’s government and citizenry, and their claims that the ancient Macedonians were not Greeks. [1]

The world is composed of various peoples and cultures with many locked in a web of manipulated conflicting interests, yet it is conventionally expected that peace should reign everywhere. In this regard, the area of the Balkans is not an exception but approaches the extreme example of controversy. As demonstrated in the letter, which was sent to President Barack Obama, which you co-signed along with three hundred and seventy two other world celebrated scholars of Graeko-Roman Antiquity, and which was then posted on the Web site http://www.macedonia-evidence.org, your collective years of historical research, your depth of understanding this part of the world, and your ability to present the facts is truly the only a unique instrument and useful guide to maintain stability and peace in this vulnurable region.
As you know, the aforementioned letter expressed the opposition of the co-signers to President Barack Obama for the erroneous recognition of Skopje as “Republic of Macedonia” by President George W. Bush on November 4, 2004. In the letter the co-signers considered that: “This action not only abrogated geographic and historic fact, but it also has unleashed a dangerous epidemic of historical revisionism, of which the most obvious symptom is the misappropriation by the government in Skopje of the most famous of Macedonians, Alexander the Great. [2]
The letter that was sent to President Barack Obama, along with other scholarly material from the Web site, was published (with permission) later by the Pan-Macedonian Studies Center with the title: Macedonia-Evidence. Dr. Frank L. Holt from the University of Texas in his prologue of Macedonia-Evidence wrote: The future surely fascinates us, but it has no force. It merely waits while the past drives the present. On the train-tracks of time, the engine has always been in the back, pushing rather than pulling. Thus, the past cannot be unhooked and unheeded as so much dead weight. Nor can it be left in the hands of the wrong engineers: Whoever controls the past determines the future, and that ultimately depends upon who in the present is shaping the past. Parliaments? Pundits? Preachers? Poets? Presidents? Who controls the present must choose carefully whom to trust with our past, else a false and monstrous future may result. [3]
Dr. Fox, unfortunately Skopje’s (FYROM’S) name issue has been treated by the politicians of the great powers of our time as a bi-lateral issue between Greece and Skopje; they have overlooked its great impact on peace and the great destruction that will occur to the factual archaeological research and other Graeco-Roman scholarly work that was developed over a great many years by countless archaeologists and scholars throughout the world. Any name for Skopje that contains “Macedonia” in it will bring about historical and intellectual destruction, let alone the fact that, using the name, as a separate and sovereign country’s name, as it is often done, may cause deepening of conflicts in the Balkans. It is not just the classes that are taught in Skopje and Greece and the books that are in their libraries that will be affected but this will affect schools and libraries all over the globe. Fortunately academics and intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments, to analyze actions according to their causes and motives, and often hidden intentions. Western democracy gives the academic “licence”, the facilities, and the training to filter the truth from the distortions distortions and revisionisms.
We take this opportunity to thank you Dr. Fox for speaking loudly and factualy as you have done at the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University and other places. All other scholars must realize the critical nature of this issue as it pertains to intellectual historical truth and take your example and also speak often and loudly themselves. If sufficient numbers do so maybe the polititians will hear them and do the right thing. In this light and context the intellectuals and scholars, in addition to pursuing scholarly research and teaching, assume an additional role: that of the stabilizers of PEACE! “The scholarly community has a duty to preserve historic truth” [4]
We are at your service for any initiative you may take related to the falsification of Macedonian history.
