Environmental Plant Physiology, Plant Nutrition, Photosynthesis, Hydroponics, Crop Management, Cropping systems, Fertigation, Expert Systems.
EXPERIENCE:
As a youth, and University student, worked on the family farm with a variety of horticultural crops (citrus, fresh market tomato, processing tomato, melons, peaches, apricots), tobacco, olives, and fruit tree nursery. Studied at the Agricultural University of Athens graduating in 1973 with a M.Sc. in Agricultural Development. Served in the army for 2.5 years, as an officer. Moved to Canada in 1976. Studied at the University of Guelph under Dr. H. Tiessen graduating in 1979 with a M.Sc. in Horticulture. Worked as an Agricultural Researcher with Libby=s in Chatham, Ontario, gaining experience on many processing crops (1978-1980). Was hired by Agriculture Canada as a Greenhouse Vegetable Biologist (BI-01) in 1980. Promoted to BI-02 in 1981. During 1982-1984 was on educational leave at the University of Guelph studying towards a Ph.D. under Dr. D. P. Ormrod. Graduated in 1985 with a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology. Promoted to Research Scientist (SE-RES 01) in 1985. Named Greenhouse Vegetable Commodity Team Leader in 1986. Promoted to SE-RES 02 in 1987. Appointed Assistant Professor for Vegetable Crops at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece (largest University in the Balkans, 1991; resigned shortly after).
Promoted to SE-RES 03 in 1994. Elected President of the Canadian Society for Horticultural Science in 1995. Convened an ISHS Symposium on AGrowing Media and Hydroponics@ in May 1997 in Windsor, Ontario; concurrent with the Annual Meetings of the Hydroponic Society of America, and the Annual Meeting of the American Greenhouse Vegetable Growers. Member of the Scientific Committee and Invited Speaker at the ISHS Symposium on AWater Quality and Quantity in Horticulture@, Canary Islands,1996. Convened the Canadian Greenhouse Vegetable Crops Conference in Leamington, Ontario, in April 1996. Convened the Inaugural Meeting of the National Greenhouse Vegetable Research Network in Harrow, Ontario and was elected Leader of the Network. Since 1996, appointed Adjunct (Full) Professor at the University of Laval (1996). Named Associate Editor of the Can. J. of Plant Science (1997-2003 ). Elected Chairperson of the Ontario Protected Crops Research and Services Committee (1998-2002). Since 1999, appointed Adjunct (Full) Professor at the University of Windsor. During 1999-2006, member of the Ozone Operations Resource Group of the World Bank. Promoted to Senior Research Scientist (SE-RES-04) in 2001.
Received over $5M in research grants over the last 10 years. International assignments to China (with UNDP), Hungary (with InterPower Corporation), USA (with the World Bank), Mexico (multiple trips), Greece (multiple trips), The Honduras (with Chiquita Brands International), Iran (Dept. of Agriculture) and Kuwait (KISR). Recently, served as Co-leader of the National Program on Greenhouse Vegetable Research in Canada and as Senior Research Advisor within AAFC.
